NEW IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 2011
Publish or perish!
The PBRF has put enormous pressure on academic staff and graduate students to publish their research findings in quality journals. As a result, it is becoming harder to get articles accepted, at the same time that staff and students have a growing need to publish.
In 2011 we are offering a new seminar that has three goals:
1. Help participants to understand the publication process from the raw research findings to the published article.
2. Work with participants’ own research findings and facilitate their route to publication.
3. Provide a range of examples and models for how to write journal articles.
Proposed programme
Day one
1pm. Getting started. This session teaches the basics from deciding the topic of your paper and which journals to target. A two hour introductory session sets the scene, and then students work in small groups to find appropriate journals, isolate their topic areas, and write a one-page proposal.
Day two
9am. From proposal to reality. Using participants’ proposals and other research as examples, this four hour workshop concentrates on how to write a high quality, interesting and effective journal article. The aim is to maximise publishability, use bibliographic materials effectively and improve generic writing skills.
1.30pm. Final session. The final session discusses how and where to get support for writing tasks, individual methods to manage the writing process and the use of mentors. Participants will be asked to plan their publication tasks for the next 12 months and individual feedback will be given on the plans.
Tertiary organisations are invited to book their sessions now for early 2011. For group sessions, we will take up to 10 students, for a total cost of $1500 + GST, plus travel and accommodation for the seminar leader. The organisation needs to provide a venue, access to databases for searching via the intranet, and any refreshments. This is top class training at a bargain basement price!
The seminars will be run by either Dr Liz Gordon or Dr Lesley MacGibbon.

Other training, mentoring and related work
In addition to the new seminar, a number of other services are offered to research teams and academic staff.
Mentoring
We undertake mentoring of existing and new research projects in the social science, education and law areas. Sometimes this work is paid via a small lump sum but often it is offered pro bono to emerging researchers, depending on whether research funds are available. Ring Liz on 03 980 5422 to discuss your needs.
Individual or group training
We are also prepared to offer variants of the ‘Publish or perish’ seminar to research groups or individuals at reasonable prices.
Online learning
We are also considering a seminar series on the transformative possibilities of the internet and online learning for the tertiary sector, and invite enquiries.
Other training programmes offered in recent years have been:
- Training programme for mental health workers, South Island (20 sessions), on ‘shared care in mental health’. (DHBNZ).
- Training in research systems and publication for academic staff, School of Professional Development , Christchurch College of Education
- Post-graduate teaching, University of Canterbury Educational Policy Analysis.
